Students Hurry to Finish GED® Test Before It Changes in 2014

Are you working toward passing the GED test? You might want to finish soon. The test will change next year.

The GED test now has five parts. People will have to start over if they do not pass all five parts this year. The new test will be used starting on January 2, 2014.

The GED test measures adults’ skills and knowledge. Passing the test is like getting a high school diploma n. paper that shows a person graduated.

Most states have just approved new standards n. quality levels for schools. They are called the Common Core State Standards. They help students get ready for college and careers. The new GED test fits in with the standards.

The new test will have four parts. Writing is not a separate test anymore. It will now be part of all four tests.

Students will have to take the new test on a computer. This year, they can use pencil and paper.

The changes are the first since 2002.

Close to Passing

Joyce Monroe is 24. She has been studying in a GED class in Buffalo, New York. She wants to take the test before it changes. She has taken some practice tests. She thinks she is ready for writing and science. But she still needs more work in math.

She needs to pass all five parts by the end of the year. Otherwise adv. if not, she will have to start over with the new test.

"I’m so close," she said. "I don’t want to start all over. That would make me drop v. quit GED like I did high school." She wants to show her 5-year-old daughter she can do it.

About 700,000 adults take the test each year. About 72 percent pass it. More than 1 million may take it this year before the changes.

History and Changes

The GED test was first offered in 1942. It was for soldiers who did not get to finish high school.

Armando Diaz works for the GED Testing Service.

"We see that higher ed has new standards," he said. "The workforce (and) the economy (are) changing.

"We decided it’s time to give the (test) a face-lift n. change in something to make it better," he said.

There is one more reason to pass the test now. The new test may cost twice as much. Some states will pay part of the $120 cost of the new test.

Why make it harder on someone when they're trying to succeed? I understand they want you to be prepped for college, but making the test harder is not the answer. Some people have legitimate reasons as to why theu couldn't finish high school and now are trying to achieve their ged, but can't because the test is too hard. Not Cool. #Unfair #Ridiculous

Alabama is the worse! I have passed everything but math, I choose to do the hardest last. I went in today and was 3 points away from being DONE. I figured the worse was if I didn't pass I could just retake it in a couple days....WRONG Alabama thought it would be a great idea that if you did not pass on your first attempt that it's mandatory that you wait 30 days in order to retake. Needless to say I will now probably lose the job offer I've applied for and everything will be flushed down the drain. Oh and for those that judge, I did finish high school and did graduate. However my diploma is not recognized by the state as its a private school from my home town in Florida. The testing center staff were well aware of the short time frame I had and the urgency of me getting done on my set schedule. The testing center had the decency to tell me after I failed that I couldn't retest until 30 days later. Horrible I cannot wait to be done with this b/s experience.

i have taken the g.e.d test several times through out the years and failed it. Now they come out with this new version of the test which is gonna be more expensive than the older one, and its gonna also be harder too. Seriously what the hell is the school board trying to do. I just wish i had taken the g.e.d test from back in the day when my mom took it. Because she told me it was way easier. oh and if you are wondering i am 23

It does not matter the reason someone did not finish high school. The only thing that needs to matter to the general public is that you do finish. The outcome will far out weigh the back treading! Be proud of your certificate. As long as you know you worked for it, you certainly deserve it no matter when you receive it!

Honestly Everyone's Reason For Not Finishing High School Is Different And Not Necessarily Because They Wanted To Drop Out But Because Of Living With An Unstable Family. My Story Is, My Mom Was On Crack Cocaine And Decided To Have Another Baby In Her Thirties And Then Through Her Newborn Off On Me As A Teenager, While She Chased Her High, In The Streets. With No Help From Family Members I Was Stuck Raising Her Child, When I Was Supposed To Be In School Myself. So Of Course I Couldn't Go To School With Her Baby, I Was Stuck Inside The House Or Walking The Streets Looking For Her To Come Home, So She Can Get Her Baby But No Luck. I Cried Everyday Because I Was Stuck With This Baby That Wasn't Mine And On Top Of That My Mom Only Came Home Once A Week With Groceries And formula For Me To Continue To Watch Her Baby. Then She'd Head Back Out On Her Mission, As A Result, I Didn't, Well Couldn't Finish School. Eventually Someone Contacted Social Services And My Sibling Was Taken Into State Custody. My Mom Was Forced To Get Rehabilitation Or She Wouldn't Get Her Child Back. I Ended Up Basically Homeless At The Age Of 15, I Just Bounced Around Homes Of Friends And Some Family Until Age 17. Got A Job In Fast Food And Even Tried To Enroll Myself Back In School But Was Turned Away And Told To Enroll For Ged At An Adult Education Center. Even Though I Missed Most Of Middle And High School, I Still Tried To Understand What Was Being Taught At Adult Ed But I Continued To Fail The Exams Math Section, Which I Believe To Be At Least 6 Or 7 Times Throughout 2003-2005. So Guess What I Just Completely Gave Up But It Was Bothering Me Every Year That I Gave Up And I Felt So Stupid And I Blamed My Mom Drug Habit For It All. I Just Prayed And Cried For Many Years But Eventually God Showed Up And Showed Out In 2012. I Got A Reliable Car And Found A Ged Center That Offered Free Ged Classes And Also Free Childcare So I Wouldn't Have To Worry About Childcare While I Learned. To Me Thats All I Needed To Succeed, Blessed. I Studied Math Most Of 2012 And 2013 And I Didn't Let Anything Stop Me From Accomplishing My Goal Of Getting My Ged Before 2014. So God Is Always Right On Time, It Took Me Damn Near A Decade But I Didn't Give Up And I Did It, I Did It. So No Matter What Don't Ever Lose Faith Or Give Up Trying. If Can Do It, So Can You And I Didn't Even Go To High School.... How About That! :-) :-)

My heart goes out to everyone attempting to take the test to improve their lives. I must say that I've been fortunate over 20 plus years of employment. I've had pretty decent jobs without my diploma, even jobs that required it. My reason for taking the GED is because I'm going to start my own business and I need that piece of paper in order to head to college in the Fall. Everyone's situation for taking the GED is different. You even have celebrities and people well beyond their years attempting to better themselves. What's unfortunate is that now you have to pay more money to take the test and it's more difficult for the ones that are already struggling financially. I strongly feel that in order to pass the test will require extensive studies for at least a year because the way the test is formatted, most people that are taking the test are older and more serious thatn the kids that are dropping out of high school. An older gentlemen in my class has been studying for over 8 months and kept failing. As much as he tried he eventually dropped out of class because he kept failing. The question is, Is this test designed for us to fail? I know the numbers at my schoo has dropped significantly since the computerized test. Keep the faith guys!

Through the first 4 months of the current GED numbers are starting to trickle in. I teach Adult Basic Education at a state run prison. Currently, our state has 6 GED graduates through 4 months. It usually has 70. I was told other states are having this issue as well. Arkansas usually has around 200 graduates this time of the year. They currently have 7. The GED did get a lot tougher. Thankfully, for test takers, there are other options. There are two other major equivalency tests being offered; the HiSET and the TASC. The HiSET is very similar to the 2002 version of the GED and I believe many testing sites are using that over the GED. Any of these tests will earn a test taker a High School Equivalency Certificate. Many testing sites that started to use the GED, realized that it was more difficult that most realized. We were told that it was going to be norm referenced with outgoing seniors. That does not appear to be the case, as outgoing high school seniors struggled with the test, but the scaled scores did not replicate their results. My advice, unless you are advanced (read: ready to go to college but need the formality of having a High School Diploma or Equivalency), test using the HiSET.

As a prospective college student myself (studying journalism, history & law at Boston College) i gotta say, i have little sympathy for the individuals complaining about the new format & price increase. Leaving high school prematurely, is one of the stupidest things one can do, regardless of the reasoning behind it. yet all these people did exactly that, and i or anybody should show sympathy? No! Their in this predicament, because of decisions they made. I'm not saying i don't admire their initiative, it's commendable, but it comes far too late. Most of the people complaining on here are 30+ & still don't have a high school diploma or nearest equivalency, i have to wonder... What the hell have these people contributed to society? More importantly, what have they been doing with their lives, all this time? Welfare? Freeloading? Probably both, they are one in the same. I only just turned 20, yet i'm already a GOP Affiliate, High School Graduate, College student & more. I honestly don't know how people go through life without certainty or purpose, without a diploma you have nether, nor the prospects to achieve something special. Plus you miss out on college, which in of itself; is worth sticking around for the diploma. Anyways, at the risk of sounding condescending, i'll wish all General Equivalency diploma hopefuls good luck and best wishes! P.S I'm aware there are several punctuation errors above, but I'm tired & honestly far to lazy too fix them anyways. I'm also aware calling myself lazy in a lighter tone, yet coloring other people (freeloaders) in a darker tone is quite hypocritical, but whatever.

I passed 4 tests so far in three days. I used Gedforfree.com to study. On the HiSet, you need a score over 8 to pass and my scores were 12 for Math, 15 for Language Arts reading(did not study for that but I should have, 17 Science and 17 for Social Studies. I am waiting on my results for the Language Arts- Writing I took on 3/11/14.I studied hard for the Math(which I am not good at)for two days with a lot of interruptions. If I can do it, so can you. Say positive things while you study and before the test be confident you can pass and don't panic. It wasn't bad like I thought it was going to be.

What was the point in making changes to the test...I just went back after the winter break, from what I heard from my teacher NOW I'm PISSED!!! My teacher said they did NOT give them enough teaching materials yet so she can help us prepare for the new test. I mubbled as I was putting my books into my book bag.. (then they were not ready to make the change they should of left it alone) my teacher heard me and AGREED! Please: I would like to know if anyone who is in GED class is going though this??? Cuz I raised up alot in class about it. I sat in front of the class and could tell while my teacher once looked like she could just teach us, Now was like in her own Question in trying to understand as she was reading the new way to do the work... Please feel free to send me an email on this or other things ...one more thing I also got told that there is NO TEST TO TAKE YET NOT UNTIL SPRINGTIME...so in reading other peoples comments someone said they have taking the new test already?????

So now that many people have their diploma the job are still paying minimum wages . And are hiring part time are using mostly agency to seek worker for their company people with big degree are going for low job . This country is going down they are using the GED to disqualified people who apply for simple job such as cashier you have to have a GED. Some people who have GED or bachelor's they can't even communicate well while serving the job world. Many people can't study well because they're stress out in united state of America . Because of bills can't buy food no job for diploma holder. Yet they said they're preparing the 2014 for job market . But my friend where is the job? For the millions of American who are out of job. It the other way around the educators are turning the GED around by making it harder so only a few can pass it . So that way , they can still hold their job until retirement . But only the strong will service. For god don't like ugly. While they stress their brain to make the exam hard for human kind . Karma will kick in, alzimmer will pay them back with their nasty deed.

Hi Katie, Since this story was written last year, some states have decided they don't like the new GED Test and are offering a different high school equivalency test. The best way to get started is to contact an adult education program in your area. You can find one at the National Literacy Directory: nationalliteracydirectory.org/ If you are in a state that offers the GED Test, you can find a place to take it if you register online on the GED Testing Service Website: ged.com/ Once you register, you can find a place to take the test. If I didn't pass I was NOT going to retake it all over again on the new test. I feel like a weight has been lifted off me. Never underestimate yourself. The test really wasn't as hard as it seems. I scored so high on reading that all I needed was the lowest score on all the other tests. Focus on your strengths but improve your weaknesses & good luck!!

I waited until now to finally go get my GED. I think being terrified to fail kept me from taking it and I passed all 5 parts on the first try. I would encourage people to just take the test it's not as bad as it might seem I scored low in the mathematics with a 480 and my highest score was a 710. I'm very proud of myself and I plan on making 2014 a great year for myself. Stay positive and good luck to everyone trying to achieve their GED you can do it!!!

I have been stressing out for the last 2months over my results.I studied on my own and passed on the first try.The practice test in the, study book was actually much more difficult.I kind of understand them changing the structure of the test because change is constant, but the high pricing raises a red flag.I send all of you guys facing the new test my warm currents.I know you guys can do it.Don't give up.Positive Energy Always Corrects Errors

challenge yourself, Everything you want to learn can be learned right from a library book. Its up to you to teach knowledge to yourself, Its your brain so use it. Once information enters your brain, it can't be removed unless you get brain damage. Math will always be math, reading & science will always be the same. You dont have to know it all, You just have to know enough to pass. Keep having babies but cant keep a book open long enough to gather the info, thats your problem fool

Sad *** people posting... We have all kinds of self help elementary verbiage math/science/la/ss books in all local libraries. If you want something bad enough, You'll eat, sleep & breathe it day/night until you understand whats being registered in your brain. 2014 test isn't getting harder, Just more technical as in show your work instead of guessing. The test even gives you a formulas tab so there is no need to try to memorize all formulas. Get books and study your weak areas everyday & eventually you'll learn it & remember how to apply it on the test. People scared of any lil change instead of stepping up & challenging themselves to gain more know

I've been taking the GED for almost 2 decades, and still cant get it .I passed all subjects but don't have enough points to pass,so sad And now im older damn near 50 .my mind isn't as good as it was," I had to start over twice because they keep changing ,they should have a age group because older ppl shouldn't be in the same room as younger children us older ppl need extra time to understand what were reading being on a time scheduled takes away our thinking and causes us to get nervous and we start choosing the wrong answer.

I feel like such a dummy😥 I made this same attempt 13 years ago and failed math back then as well, I think I'm going to give up, I can't afford it any more, I'm. Already out 192 dollars, ugh

I took my test in November. I found out that I passed, yesterday. The test wasn't hard at all. If you take time to prepare and study, you'll pass. No one is responsible for your education, except yourself. No one owes you anything. Stop whining and complaining and get it done. This is what is wrong with the world today.

I wish I knew more about the new testing. I have finished all my testing except math. I have math phobia and have been terrified to retake the test. My fault for waiting do to fear. But I'm not alone. Why do they feel its necessary to make something so many adults struggle to do even harder!? I didn't graduate high school. I was young and on the run from a dysfunctional family. It just seems to be that our country doesn't care to help us. Only about the evil dollar!

I took the test at 50. Studied for about 2 weeks - math was my hardest part during the study period and I still got a 540 on that portion. 540 was the lowest score and 800 was my top score. It really is easy, hard to believe that 40% of high school seniors couldn't pass it. The hardest part of the test is the worrying about it before hand.

The educators are at fault for individuals not able to pass the GED. The system continues to advance children to the next grade even though they are not prepared. I would bet if you took all the students due to graduate from high school in June of 2014 and had them take the current GED, you would find MANY would not pass. Let’s get real here. Many adults are not passing the current test – yet the government feels the test needs to be more difficult! Not sure I understand the reasoning. This is a government money-maker for sure and I am sorry if you are stuck in the vicious loop. Let your voice be heard.

It's not right. Most people just want their GED so they can get a job in a factory, or some become skilled in something simple. Those that go on to college obviously are smart enough to pass the entrance exams and graduate, so there's really no point in all of this. I just spent an entire year studying for this test, and finally took it. I can do the math but I need more time. I have short term memory problems that hinder my performance, and now it's getting even harder. I pray to God that by some miracle I receive my GED in the mail in two weeks.

Oh boy well I do feel bad that changing it will make it almost impossible for some people to pass. I can kinda understand why they are doing it. People who do stay in high school work their butt off to get their diploma. The GED test they are currently using is fairly easy and not equivalent to actual high school work and high school level education. To charge more is definitely wrong though and raising the price should definitely be reconsidered since some will need to take it multiple times. I had kids very young and dropped out. I ended up getting my GED in 2008 the year I would have graduated. I couldn't help but think there was no way it should have been as easy as it was and no way it should be equivalent to my friends who some with kids and some without stuck it out and finished high school barely passing. I was failing high school because the work was too hard but passed the GED with a high score it just didn't seem right to me and still doesn't. Why is the test so much easier when it is supposed to be equivalent? I'm sorry I have opposing vies but still wish everyone the best of luck passing.

This shows how much problem solving went into this action. Absolutely none. It's all about making more money off the people that need their GED. What this system is doing is taking advantage of people that are in need of a GED. This is another big American hustle, camouflaged to look like something better. Sure they're gonna double charge those that already took the test, because they need to pay for those NEW computers. The irony of it all is that the average American is not becoming smarter compared to other students in foreign countries. Yet they are making the test harder, knowing most will now fail. That is not great problem solving skills put to use. Leave well enough alone, if the GED student pass, surely they will go on to collage and learn more...ya think?
